The South Australian holiday

Stock Photography By Christina Jablonski

The images in this lightbox were taken during my recent trip to South Australia. The southern region of the State has wonderful scenery, rose gardens, historic towns and an incredible number of vineyards. Kangaroo Island is one of its great nature attractions with the Remarkable Rocks and seal colonies.

Image Details for The South Australian holiday

1. Black swan, South Australia. The pictured swan was gliding near the water's edge of the Torrens River in Adelaide. It was quite graceful with its arched neck and the fluffed up feathers gleaming in the morning sun.

2. Glenelg ferris wheel, Adelaide, South Australia. The carousel with its colourful gondolas is a favourite among the children.

3. Floribunda rose, South Australia. The pictured shrub of the floribunda rose 'Queen Elizabeth' has the attractive flowers and a delicate perfume.

4. Glenelg jetty, Adelaide, South Australia. The pictured jetty was constructed in 1969 and replaced the one that was destroyed by a hurricane some twenty years earlier. The original Glenelg jetty was built there in early days of the European settlement in Adelaide, in the mid 1850s.

5. Glenara, Souh Australia. Glenara, the heritage residence in Glenelg overlooking the sea, was built in 1873 for the William Hill's family. Its art deco verandah added in 1920 was to protect the building from the harsh weather conditions.

6. Bonython Hall, the University of Adelaide. The 'Great Hall' of the University of Adelaide (built 1933-1936) was named after its founder Sir John Langdon Bonython, the editor and proprietor of the city's newspaper, the Advertiser.

7. The Palm House, Adelaide Botanic Gardens, Australia. The beautiful historic building designed by the German architect in 1875 has a collection of plants from Madagascar on display.

8. Lotus pond, Adelaide Botanic Gardens, Australia. A view of the lotus pond was taken early in the morning at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens

9. Morphetts Engine House, Burra, South Australia. The engine house (now a museum) was built in the 1860 to pump the underground water for its use in the copper production. It was a part of so the called 'Monster Mine', one of the largest mining centres in the world. The centre was closed in 1877 due to declining copper prices and high production costs.

10. Floribunda rose, Australia. The 'Claire' rose is a large flowering bush with pale pink flowers and subtle fragrance.

11. Paringa Suspension Bridge, South Australia. Open in January 1927, this heritage bridge was built to carry a rail track (now a bike and pedestrian lane) and road traffic across the Murray River to Renmark. One of its spans can be opened daily to allow passage of large vessels.

12. Gum trees & saltbush, South Australia. On the banks of the Murray River grow varieties of trees and shrubs. This nature scene was taken in the Muthro Forest about fifteen kilometres from Renmark.

13. Paringa Suspension Bridge, South Australia. Open in January 1927, this heritage bridge was built to carry a rail track (now a bike and pedestrian lane) and road traffic across the Murray River to Renmark. One of its spans can be opened daily to allow passage of large vessels.

14. Murtho Forest, South Australia. Pictured is a view of the cliffs on the Murray River from the Murtho Forest lookout. This bend of the river is about fifteen kilometres from the town of Paringa.

15. Martindale Hall, Mintaro, South Australia. This elegant Georgian building may be best known from the 1975 Peter Weir's film 'Picnic at the Hanging Rock' where it became featured as Appleyard College for Young Ladies.

16. White Riesling Grapes, Clare Valley, South Australia. White Riesling grapes came originally from Germany and adapted well to the climatic and soil conditions in Australia. The Clare Valley, where this cluster was photographed, is one of the best regions for growing of these grapes.

17. Sea lion, Kangaroo Island, Australia. Australian sea lion rests on the shores of the Southern Ocean.

18. Kangaroo Island, South Australia. This photo of colourful coastal vegetation was taken at the south western tip of Kangaroo Island, Cape du Coedic.

19. Remarkable Rocks, South Australia. One of the great attractions of Kangaroo Island is a formation of granite rocks. They acquired their strange surreal shapes because of their exposure to varying climatic conditions and the influence of the Southern Ocean over hundreds of millennia

20. Sea lion, Kangaroo Island, Australia. Partly covered in wet sand, the pictured animal is resting on the shore after its feeding on fish, squid or perhaps some other sea creatures.

21. Cape du Couedic, Kangaroo Island, Australia. This photo of the two Casuarina Islets was taken from the south western tip of Kangaroo Island, Cape du Coedic.

22. Remarkable Rocks, South Australia. One of the great attractions of Kangaroo Island is a formation of granite rocks. They acquired their strange surreal shapes because of their exposure to the harsh environmental conditions over hundreds of millennia.
