Winter's Day In Canada

Stock Photography By Dennis Kraft

What can you say about living in Canada in the winter? It is cold. And there is a really good chance there will be snow. But, if you dress warm, and pull on boots, and head out into the great chill you will find a world of jewelled trees, fields of white snow, contrasts of dark and light, and a colourful world of blues, violets, pinks, silvers, greys, whites, and blacks. A world of winter beauty.

Image Details for Winter's Day In Canada

1. Car in the Ditch . With snow and ice, driving a vehicle can be treacherous in Canada in the winter. Many Canadians have put their car in the ditch or slid off the road at least once despite trying to be careful.

5. Canadian Winter 03. Here is what you should know about winter in Canada. It is cold. You will encounter snow and ice. You will see your breath when you breathe. Your face may hurt the days are short and the nights long. And when the snow falls and blankets the ground and trees it is peaceful and beautiful and it is still cold.

Your face may hurt the days are short and the nights long. And when the snow falls and blankets the ground and trees it is peaceful and beautiful and it is still cold.

9. Aspen Grove in Winter 01. There are often two or three frost days in the winter where thick hoar frost coats the branches and twigs of trees, creating beautiful white sculptures that glisten. This Aspen poplar tree is one such example

10. Winters Light 02. Leave afternoon light leaves the snow a hue of light blue and the sky a subtle shade of pink on a snowy day in Confederation park in Calgary, Alberta.

11. Winters Light 01. Leave afternoon light leaves the snow a hue of light blue and the sky a subtle shade of pink on a snowy day in Confederation park in Calgary, Alberta.

12. Winter Twilight. As the day fades, a line of barren trees leads off to the distance edges of the park. It is cold and clear.

13. Winter River Valley. A back drop of the mostly frozen Bow River in the Foothills of Alberta with the Eastern Rocky Mountains in the background.

14. Winter Afternoon by the River . There is something I love about the dark trees outlined against a grey sky and snow covered foreground. Maybe it is the subtlety of the colours or the contacts. It may be cold but there is still beauty.

15. Winter Evening by the River . Another shot of a set of trees along the Bow River in Calgary. I love the contrasts between light and dark.

16. River Ice In Winter. Ice lines the shoreline of the serenely flowing Bow River.

17. Winter River 03. Winter not only brings snow, it brings ice on the river and when the temperature drops, into negative double numbers, the river can freeze completely over. Fast running water keeps at least an open channel for much of the winter and a variety of beautiful images.

18. Winter River 06. Winter not only brings snow, it brings ice on the river and when the temperature drops, into negative double numbers, the river can freeze completely over. Fast running water keeps at least an open channel for much of the winter and a variety of beautiful images.

20. Winter Trees and River. Three barren trees outlined on the river edge. The beauty of winter is harsher, colder and more subtle.

21. Ice Skaters on Local Pond. Ice skaters glide across an open frozen pond in Southern Alberta. The temperature drops sufficiently to freeze over this local park lagoon creating a recreational skating area.

22. Hockey Rink . An outside community hockey rink in Southern Alberta is vacant of the usual crowd of hockey platers and ice skaters.

23. Outside Curling Rink . Curling in a sport in Canada played with weights called rocks and brooms that team members use to sweep the ice in order to help direct the rocks to the centre target and to move opponent rocks away.

24. Cross Country Skier on a Snowy Evening . A cross country skier glides through the snow on an evening ski in one of Calgary's parks.

25. Biker In Winter. In every country there are a few hard core souls. This bike rider is making his way home from a day at the office on his bicycle braving cold, darkness and slippery bike paths.

26. Canadian Winter 08. Here is what you should know about winter in Canada. It is cold. You will encounter snow and ice. You will see your breath when you breathe. Your face may hurt the days are short and the nights long. And when the snow falls and blankets the ground and trees it is peaceful and beautiful and it is still cold.

27. Winter Wonderland 01. A frost covered spruce tree amidst a number of aspen groves is decked in white.

28. Snowy Field and Mountains. Snow, ice and light can create beautiful images with the right light. This photo was taken in the foothills West of Calgary and the Rocky Mountains can be seen in the background.

29. Eastern Rocky Mountains In Winter 03. This photo is of the Eastern Canadian Rocky Mountains in March. The rolling foothills of Alberta give way to the rugged peaks of the rockies.

30. Rocky Mountains In Winter 04. The Canadian Rocky Mountains in winter have a beauty all their own. They can also be unforgiving for those who are not prepared. Temperatures can drop well below minus thirty celsius, and blizzards, and white out conditions are not uncommon.

31. Rocky Mountains In Winter 03. The snow pack in the Canadian Rocky Mountains can easily reach over ten feet deep and more at higher elevations.

32. Rocky Mountains In Winter 02. The Canadian Rocky Mountains in winter have a beauty all their own. Snow comes in many forms from light powder, heavy wet slush, and with melting and freezing, packed layers that someone light enough might even be able to walk over.

33. Rocky Mountains In Winter 01. The Canadian Rocky Mountains in winter have a beauty all their own. By mid-September snow begins to accumulate and often remains well into May and even June.

34. Rocky Mountain Slope In Winter 01. The Canadian Rocky Mountains in winter have a harsh beauty all their own. Snow begins falling in September and over time accumulated snow falls down the slopes in avalanches. Long indentations of white on mountain slope indicate gulley's and avalanche path areas. December, January, and February when high levels of snow fall occur make this a time for caution when skiing and snowshoeing in mountainous areas.

35. Rocky Mountain Slope In Winter 02. The Canadian Rocky Mountains in winter have a beauty all their own. Snow accumulates on the sides of the mountains and with enough snow, avalanches cascade down steep ravines and cirques.

36. Canadian Winter 13. Here is what you should know about winter in Canada. It is cold. You will encounter snow and ice. You will see your breath when you breathe. Your face may hurt the days are short and the nights long. And when the snow falls and blankets the ground and trees it is peaceful and beautiful and it is still cold.

43. Winter Aspens 01. Aspen trees thrive in the foothills of the Eastern Rockies. While many other deciduous trees can not handle the sudden temperature shifts of the climate in Western Alberta. The temperature may change by more than 30 degrees celsius in a number of hours due to the warm winds called Chinooks. Aspens are superbly adapted to the environment and on days when the frost comes they are beautiful.

45. Park Bridge In Winter. A park bridge in winter awaits Spring so that water may once again flow freely underneath.

46. Winter Creek 02. A snow covered creek in winter has its own beauty.

47. Winter Creek 01. A dark water creek is framed by snowy banks and barren willows.

48. Aspen Poplars in Winter 01. A wander through poplar trees on a chill winter day has its own rewards. Every season has its beauty, even winter. Contrasting colours are more apparent, and everything feels cleaner.

49. Aspen Poplars in Winter 02. A wander through poplar trees on a chill winter day has its own rewards. Every season has it's beauty even winter. Coyotes, squirrels, rabbits, mice and an assortment of overwintering birds remain active here in the winter time.

50. Winter Country Road. There is a bleak beauty to the countryside in Western Alberta in the winter. Back in the 1930's farmers began planting trees along the roadsides to act as wind breaks and help prevent soil erosion.

51. Winter Berries . The red of Alberta rose hips contrast agains the blue hues of the snow. Rose hips are a survival plant because their skin contains vitamin C.

52. Winter Spruce B & W. A group of spruce trees stand, draped in a snowy mantle in Confederation Park in Calgary, Alberta. I enjoy how the contrast between the dark and light is captured by the trees and the snow.

53. Winter Night 03. As a photographer, I love the contrast between light and dark, especially when it comes in the form of dark trees, pale snow and sky, and subtle hues of blue. A solitary walk in on a chill snowy night in the park allowed me to catch this shot.

54. Snowy Park 02. A still night in Bowness Park with heavy snowflakes falling and the air cold and clean. The trees a dark and perfect contrast to the white and pale blue hues of the snow and sky.

55. Snowy Park 01. A still night in Bowness Park, Calgary with heavy snowflakes falling and the air cold and clean. The trees a dark and perfect contrast to the white and pale blue hues of the snow and sky.

56. Winter Night 02. Winter nights have their own colours and beauty. Purples and pinks, silvers and greys, blacks and blues with a little rose thrown in from distant lights. I love the sharp contrasts and silhouettes.

57. Winter Night 01. A dark spruce, framed in the silhouettes of aspen trees against a violet-grey sky and a dark blue hued snowy foreground. Winter in Canada has its own harsh beauty.

58. Black Tree, Blue Ice . In early evening the black silhouette of a young tree set against the blue hues of river ice.

59. Winter Weeds B & W . Winter weeds contrast with the white snow resting on river ice.

60. Winter River 09. As a photographer, I am always drawn to light on water and the many different manifestations of colour and beauty that are showcased at different seasons and different times of day. One would not think that a river would have much character or be so changeable in winter but these photos speak otherwise.

64. Winter Sunset 02. A Canadian winter sunset complete with spruce trees in silhouette.

65. Winter Sunset . Sunsets in Canada are often glorious affairs and this one is no exception. I particularly like the contrast between the sky and the snowy Alberta foothills in the foreground.

66. Winter Night B & W. My scary winter picture with hanging branches in contrast to a white snow field. The image evokes childhood memories of stories of supernatural creatures who wander the winter night.

67. Dark Trail in the Snow. A dark snowy night with tracks leading off into the dark.

68. Winter Night Tree . This photo for me captures the haunting skeletal visages of a tree on a winters night in Canada. The contrast between light and dark evoke a memory of stories of shadowy winter creatures from Canadian folklore. The loup garou, the bush men, and the windigo are three that come to mind.

69. Snow-covered Vehicle in a Parking Lot B & W. Anyone who has lived and worked in Canada where it snows, has more than once left work or returned to their vehicle in the parking lot to find their vehicle covered with snow. Snow brushing, window scraping and sitting on cold seats are part of the experience as well.
