Malacca (Melaka) is on the west coast of Malayan Peninsula on the Strait of Malacca. That location made it a primary focus for European explorers seeking control of the spice trade. A sultanate founded at the start of the 15th century by a Sumatran prince was in turn the Portuguese, Dutch and British colony. Malacca became a part of Malaysia in 1957 when that country gained independence from Britain. This collection of images shows religious and colonial buildings and the old Chinese shop-houses by the river, all creating a heritage area, small but packed with tourist attractions.
