Phagchepo, the blue king of the south

Dzongs are high-walled fortresses with central courtyards that serve as both monasteries and an administrative centre in Bhutan. Punakha dzong is between the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers where they meet. One of the most spectacular dzongs in Bhutan, it was built 1637 by the Zhabdrung. The dzong has white walls have brown and terracotta trim. Many painted frescoes such as this one of the Phagchepo, blue king of the south, adorn the dzong walls.
